After-School Theater Enrichment Programs for K–8 Schools in Arlington, VA

Structured, teaching artist-led theater programs for kids after school — in Arlington, Alexandria, Washington, DC, and McLean.

Encore Stage & Studio has partnered with schools and PTAs across Arlington, Alexandria, Washington, DC, and McLean to bring professional theater enrichment directly into school buildings. The program is designed for school administrators and PTA leaders who want a reliable, high-quality creative enrichment partner — one that shows up, runs a real program, and gives students something they carry with them.

Sessions run 60 or 75 minutes, in blocks of 6 to 11 weeks, with per-student pricing that scales to your session length and schedule. Title I schools receive special pricing. Classes are fully customizable to your school's needs, age groups, and scheduling constraints.

What After-School Theater Looks Like

After-school sessions are led by Encore teaching artists and structured around theater fundamentals appropriate for the age group — character work, storytelling, ensemble skills, movement, and creative performance. The format is active and engaging, not passive.

Students do not need a theater background to participate. After-school programs welcome all experience levels — the student who has been in Encore classes for two years and the student trying something new for the first time are both in the right place.

Direct Enrollment

Families can enroll directly in Encore after-school programs running at Encore facilities in Arlington. This option works well for families whose school does not currently have a partnership program or who prefer the Encore facility environment.

What the Program Builds — Five Skills Every School Values

Theater enrichment is not an extra. It is one of the most effective ways schools develop the non-academic skills that teachers, administrators, and parents consistently identify as gaps: empathy, confidence, teamwork, creative problem solving, and leadership.

01

Empathy

Theater asks students to inhabit perspectives very different from their own. That imaginative act — however brief — builds the capacity to relate to others and value differences in experience and circumstance.

02

Confidence

Creative environments give children a place to take risks and fail safely. Students who learn to try something difficult in front of peers, adjust, and try again carry that confidence into the classroom and beyond.

03

Teamwork

Theater is a team endeavor at every level — between actors in a scene, between performer and director, between the creative team and the production. Drama classes build the communication habits that make collaborative work actually work.

04

Creative Problem Solving

When a group of students asks "how do we build a castle in this classroom?" and then figures it out together, they are practicing exactly the kind of imaginative, solutions-oriented thinking schools are trying to develop.

05

Leadership

Theater transforms students into leaders by giving them responsibility for outcomes — the show moves forward because they made it move forward. Students learn to support their peers and model what it looks like to stay committed when things get hard.

What Schools and PTAs Ask About the Enrichment Program

  • How does an after-school theater enrichment partnership with Encore work?

Encore teaching artists come directly to your school and lead after-school enrichment sessions on-site. PTAs and school administrators work with Encore's Director of Programming to select a class offering, set the schedule, determine session length and number of weeks, and confirm per-student pricing. The program runs in your building — students do not need transportation. Contact madaline.langston@encorestage.org to start the conversation.

  • What after-school theater programs are available for kids in Arlington, VA?

Encore's enrichment catalog includes more than a dozen themed class offerings for Kindergarten through 8th grade, covering storytelling, movement, acting fundamentals, Shakespeare, musical theater, improvisation, comedy, and full ten-week play production. Programs are offered through school partnerships in Arlington, Alexandria, Washington, DC, and McLean.

  • Is the enrichment program available for Title I schools?

Yes. Encore offers special pricing for Title I schools, and customized pricing is available for programs integrated into the school day rather than after-school hours. Contact the Director of Programming to discuss the right model for your school's situation.

  • Can we customize the enrichment class for our school's needs?

Yes. Encore works with PTAs and administrators to build a class that fits the school's specific student population, grade levels, scheduling constraints, and program goals. Email madaline.langston@encorestage.org to start the customization conversation.

  • Is the after-school enrichment program appropriate for students with no theater experience?

Every class in the Encore enrichment catalog is designed to be welcoming for first-timers. Classes like Acting for Everyone are explicitly designed for students who have always wanted to try acting and those who are eager to build on prior experience. No performance background is required for any program in the catalog.

Encore Stage & Studio has been a working partner to Arlington and Northern Virginia schools for 60 years. The enrichment program brings that depth of experience into your building, on your schedule, with pricing structured to make partnership accessible. If your PTA or school administration is looking for a reliable, professionally run theater enrichment program, the next step is a conversation.
